CRITICAL MATERIALS RECYCLING, INC. Joins the Global Rare Earth Industry Association
REIA is pleased to report that the rare-earths recycling developer has become a member of the global association that is committed to creating a safe and innovative rare-earth industry.
CMR is a rare-earth recycling company based in Boone, Iowa, USA. The company produces rare-earth oxides from recycled feedstocks such as e-wastes, end-of-life electric and hybrid vehicles, and magnet swarf.
Daniel Bina, CEO at CMR, commented, “We are excited to be joining REIA and the foundational group that has been assembled. Critical Materials Recycling, Inc. founded in 2021 and located in Boone, Iowa, USA, produces rare-earth oxides from recycled feedstocks. The company’s flagship, patented technology, the acid-free dissolution recycling (ADR) process, recovers the rare-earth elements from dilute e-waste streams, such as shredded hard-disk drives etc., as well as concentrated sources such as magnet swarf. The ADR process, invented at the Critical Materials Institute, Ames National Laboratory, was licensed to TdVib, LLC, who founded CMR to commercialize the technology. ADR is unique in that pure magnets are not required for the efficient and economic recovery of the REEs contained in the feedstock, due to selective leaching. Shredded HDDs, for example, do not require any pre-separation of the magnet material in order to recover 90+% of the REEs contained within the HDDs. Additionally, the remaining components can continue through the standard recycling / recovery process for other metals, including gold, platinum, and copper. Likewise, battery and hybrid electric-vehicle motors do not require disassembly to pure magnets prior to the ADR process. CMR is targeting end-of-life materials, as well as waste-stream material like magnet swarf, to improve the robustness of the circular economy and to relieve the pressure on virgin sources of rare earth elements, to meet the demand for consumer products and national security. We are a global, Belgium-based not-for-profit organization founded in 2019. REIA’s mission is to serve, promote and advance the sustainable development of the global rare-earth-element value chain. The Association’s 75 members are drawn from across the entire REE value chain, including public and private companies, research and academic institutions, government entities, policy makers and other stakeholders.
